Description

In the late 1960s the fledgling LMA, began by a group of Lebanese immigrants, established a community prayer hall and Sunday school to teach the basics of Islam. The LMA realised the need for a mosque to help facilitate the religious needs of the growing community and purchased land to build the first purpose built mosque in Sydney.
In 1972, the construction of the Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb Mosque was completed in Lakemba, NSW, and would go on to become a defining establishment of the Australian Muslim community.
